I’ve been living with psoriasis since I was 11 years old, for those who don’t know what psoriasis is, it’s essentially your body trying to make you look like a mermaid but with absolutely none of the benefits.
Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales. These patches normally appear on your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on your body. Most people are only affected with small patches. In some cases, the patches can be itchy or sore. – Description from NHS uk.
It started on my scalp and after trying many treatments and having it brushed off as dermatitis it started to spread all over my body. There have been several times that I have been covered from head to toe.
I went to see a different doctor who told me it was a strain of the disease called Guttate Psoriasis and it would only last 4 months at most. He was wrong and it’s still here several years later.
When it comes to treatment you can name it and I’ve probably had it, from creams, steroids, lotions, UVB light treatment, salt baths, tablets, and even tar. I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that this is my life now and I can either hide from it or embrace it.
Some days it’s pretty easy to forget all about it, it’s something I’m used to but other days I’m reduced to tears because of an angry flare up. I have to be incredibly careful with what products and chemicals are near my skin because it can cause my skin to burn.
My skin has been known to split and bleed if I’m under pressure which is so incredibly painful, it’s been known for all of the ‘scales’ to connect together making it almost impossible to move my hands, knees and elbows.
I’ve got a pretty strict skin care routine to try to keep it under control and as you can see from the before and after picture I’ve come a long way in 3 years. I’ve been asked many times to share it so here it is
My skin care routine
Moisturising – Moisturising is so important, if I allow my skin to go dry then I end up with tightening of the skin so I make sure to moisturise every morning and evening my go to moisturiser is from a brand called Moogoo and its for sensitive skin.
Body wash – I’ve been using Original source for around 2 years now, whilst it is a scented wash which normally is awful for my skin. This is seems to be so gentle on my skin meaning that I can have something with a nice scent!
Hair care- With my scalp I have to be SO careful with what I use. For some reason I can use something for months and then my scalp starts to reject it. I have found Lush hair bars are a little bit kinder that normal shampoos.
Make up – I don’t really wear make up for the simple reason it means less time in bed and a lot of effort but when I do all of my make up is natural collection from Wilkos!
Face – I’ve recently been using skin kissed natural facial serum on my face and it’s been so great, I pop 5 drops on my face in the morning and 5 drops on during the evening and within the two weeks I’ve been using it I can already see a massive change in my skin.
The first week did bring out some break outs which I’m assured is normal. Since I’ve found face free of any pimples and it’s feeling so smooth!
It’s been so good finding a product which whilst it is over what I’d normally spend on products it’s something I feel is so worth the price!
Having psorasis means that I will spend as much money as I physically can trying to find something thats not going to cause a break out and this is definitely my new go to facial serum!
